The Chinese nation has a long history of loving, respecting, and revering jade, and a single exquisite piece of ancient jade is often priceless. A manufacturer of high-quality art replicas sought to reproduce a piece of ancient jade, enabling enthusiasts unable to afford the exorbitant price of an authentic original to purchase and appreciate a replica suited to their financial means.

Facing problems

Ancient jade pieces are exquisitely crafted artworks featuring numerous curved surfaces and grooves; standard 3D scanners cannot capture complete 3D data for them. Excessive errors prevent the achievement of high-fidelity replication, resulting in the waste of raw materials.

Solution

Creating high-fidelity replicas requires precisely emulating every aspect of the original jade piece—including its material, dimensions, patterns, and carving style. The solution proposed by HOLON 3D engineers utilizes the HL-3DM precision 3D scanner (to efficiently and accurately capture 3D data of the ancient jade) combined with reverse engineering software to generate a 3D model.

The 3D model data supports various output formats—such as ASC, STL, PLY, and IGES—and is compatible with a range of production robots and carving machines, thereby enhancing production efficiency.
