A prominent wind turbine equipment manufacturer required 3D measurements of wind turbine blade molds to verify their manufacturing quality. Wind turbine blades are the most fundamental and critical components of a wind turbine; their design directly impacts wind energy conversion efficiency and annual power generation. Superior design, reliable quality, and excellent performance are decisive factors in ensuring the normal, stable operation of the turbine unit. Consequently, ensuring that the blade molds meet quality standards is of paramount importance.
1. Due to the massive size of wind turbine blade molds (approximately 20+ meters long and 2–3 meters wide)—combined with strict requirements for surface accuracy and the difficulty of moving the molds—using photogrammetric 3D scanners results in excessive cumulative error; mitigating the impact of this error is the primary challenge.
2. Traditional measurement methods are not only time-consuming but also yield limited data; they fail to accurately capture the 3D surface data of the blades, making it impossible to perform complete scanning and data stitching or to conduct quality inspections on the molds.
To address the challenges of scanning large-area wind turbine blade molds with high requirements for surface accuracy—specifically the need to eliminate cumulative scanning errors and ensure seamless data stitching—engineers from HOLON 3D proposed the following solution: utilizing the HL-3DP 3D photogrammetry system to independently perform 3D inspection of the massive molds (without requiring a separate 3D scanner) to rapidly acquire high-precision 3D data; converting the mold's point cloud data into triangular mesh data using reverse engineering software; and importing the data into design software for post-processing to generate a final inspection and analysis report.
