       An engine is a machine that provides power to equipment and serves as the heart of the equipment. It affects the power performance, fuel economy and environmental friendliness of the equipment, making it a core component. Therefore, no matter how well-designed the appearance of the equipment is, it is not as important as having a good engine. Continuous improvements are being made in its design, manufacturing, craftsmanship, performance and control. Current focus is placed not only on equipment power, but also on energy consumption, exhaust emissions and other environment-related aspects. Customers now need to use a 3D scanner to obtain complete 3D data of the engine for quality inspection and R&D data analysis.

Facing problems

        Automotive engines consist of numerous precise components. They are large and heavy, making them extremely inconvenient to move. Their surfaces are relatively complex with many holes. When using ordinary scanners, it is difficult to capture details on undulating surfaces, resulting in incomplete acquired data, excessive detection errors, high time and cost consumption, and low efficiency, which fails to meet customer requirements.

Solution

According to the characteristics of the workpiece and customer requirements, Holon 3D technology engineers proposed a solution. The handheld laser 3D scanner Model 37 was adopted for scanning. The fine mode was used to scan undulating surfaces with an accuracy up to 0.02 mm, and the single-line deep hole mode was applied to scan hole positions, enabling easy acquisition of complete high-precision 3D data. The operation is simple, fast and efficient.


The scanned 3D data was imported into comparison and inspection software for comparative inspection and analysis against the original CAD model, generating easy-to-understand comparison and inspection reports to meet customer needs.
