Holon 3D was commissioned by a well‑known racing company to optimize the overall performance of a race car. After learning about the actual conditions, engineers at Holon 3D used the HL‑3DW 3D scanner to scan the race car chassis and floor panel for further improvement of the vehicle’s performance.

Facing problems

1. The data acquisition density of traditional measurement methods is insufficient (lack of data volume), which makes it impossible to properly inspect the racing car chassis, and reverse drawing cannot be performed in the later stage.

2. The chassis is 4.5 m long and 2.3 m wide. Ordinary 3D scanners have a small scanning range. When scanning large‑sized objects, excessive cumulative scanning areas will cause problems such as failure to locate marker points and failed data alignment.

Solution

The chassis is an important component of a racing car. Many load‑bearing components are mounted directly on it. For this reason, the racing‑car chassis is required to possess sufficient strength to withstand impact forces from all directions while maintaining a low drag coefficient. Compared with other parts of the racing car, the manufacturing of the chassis takes more time, so the chassis must be designed first. Before the chassis is manufactured, a full‑size model must be produced. Molds are then made based on this model. Carbon‑fiber materials are laid up inside the molds, and the chassis is finally completed.

1. Preliminary Preparation

Spray the developer: to enhance the background contrast on the surface of the sample and obtain better‑quality scanning data.

Paste marking points: to enable the acquired data to be positioned and stitched within the scanning software.

2. 3D Scanning

First, lift the racing car to a certain height with an automobile lift. Then use the 3D scanner (HL‑3DW) to acquire data of the racing car chassis. Import the data into reverse‑engineering software for processing, and manufacture moulds based on the acquired data to finally produce the chassis. After improvement, the racing‑car chassis can fit the car body better, reduce wind resistance and enhance the safety of the racing car.

The Holon 3D Scanner (HL‑3DW) features:

● Extra‑large scanning range: It can rapidly acquire racing‑car chassis data and reduce stitching errors.

● Portable design: Easy to carry to the measurement site.

● Extremely fast scanning speed: Millions of data points can be obtained within 3‑5 seconds, and it only takes one hour to acquire the data of the racing‑car chassis.

● High accuracy: The scanning accuracy of chassis data reaches 0.1 mm
