A well‑known bicycle design and manufacturing company produces bicycles using carbon‑fiber materials. As the manufacturing technology for carbon‑fiber materials gradually matured, it boosted the research and development of carbon‑fiber bicycles. After years of development, carbon‑fiber composite materials have become the mainstream material for frames of high‑end and mid‑range bicycles and are popular among ordinary consumers.

Facing problems

1. Due to the lightweight‑oriented design of carbon‑fiber bicycle frames, the frame tubes are excessively thin and prone to deformation. Therefore, 3D scanners are required for 3D inspection.

2. Secondly, in view of the special strength properties of carbon‑fiber joints, frames are manufactured using different materials or processes. The connection points between different sections often become weak links. 3D scanning is adopted to support the R&D team in carrying out secondary redesign.

Solution

1.Preliminary Preparation

Spraying the developer: to improve the background contrast on the surface of the sample and obtain better‑quality scanning data.

Pasting reference markers: to enable the acquired data to be positioned and aligned in the scanning software.

2、3D Scanning

After spraying the developer and attaching marker points, the 3D scanner HL‑3DS can be used to quickly acquire 3D data of the bicycle frame in just 10 minutes with high overall scanning accuracy. Finally, import the scanned 3D data of the frame into 3D reverse‑engineering software for processing. The processed STL data of the bicycle frame can then be imported into design software for secondary design of the bicycle frame, or combined with inspection software to meet the requirements for 3D inspection of the bicycle frame.
