Volvo Trucks spare‑parts manufacturer wants to obtain 3D scan data for truck roof panels. Based on the high‑density point cloud data of the truck roof panels, it aims to distinguish defects of the product itself from its key structural areas, so as to ensure the processing efficiency and production quality of the truck roof panels.

Facing problems

1. Simply using traditional methods (such as gauges, jigs, coordinate‑measuring machines, etc.) to measure truck roof panels is extremely cumbersome and time‑consuming. In addition, it is difficult to achieve accurate and fast measurement and inspection of the shape of truck roof panels.

2. Truck roof panels feature numerous curved surfaces, with differently shaped grooves on each surface. Moreover, due to their relatively large size, truck roof panels are prone to deformation. Ordinary 3D scanners struggle to quickly and accurately obtain the 3D digital model of automobile bumpers.

Solution

Given that the truck roof features numerous curved surfaces and grooves of varying shapes on each face, Holon 3D engineers proposed a solution that employs inspection equipment: the handheld 3D scanner 3DH‑M (to rapidly acquire high‑precision 3D data of the truck roof) and reverse‑engineering software (to convert the point cloud data of the truck roof into triangular mesh surface data) for the secondary design of the truck roof.

1. Pre‑preparation work

Spray developer: to enhance the background contrast on the surface of the sample part and obtain better scanning data.

Attach marker points: to enable the acquired data to be positioned and stitched within the scanning software.

2. 3D Scanning

Holon 3D engineers used the handheld 3D scanner 3DH‑3M to quickly obtain high‑precision 3D data of the truck roof. This 3D scanner is compact, lightweight, easy to operate, fast in scanning speed, and requires no external AC power supply. It can rapidly perform 3D scanning on the top of the vehicle cab and acquire high‑density point cloud data. The 3D data of the truck roof can be obtained in only 30 minutes with an accuracy of 0.07 mm. The acquired 3D data of the truck roof is imported into reverse‑engineering software for post‑processing, which accelerates the secondary design of the truck roof, provides reliable parameters for other relevant departments, and speeds up the production of the truck roof.
