       The rapidly developing Chinese automobile industry in recent years has created broad development prospects for the domestic automotive mould sector. At present, the production of automotive moulds accounts for approximately one‑third of the total output of all moulds. A well‑known automobile manufacturer in Guangzhou needs to conduct regular quality inspections on automobile lamp moulds to check the degree of mould wear and carry out mould repair work at a later stage.

Facing problems

Client Background

The client is a Sino‑Japanese joint‑venture enterprise that has introduced advanced Japanese automobile manufacturing technologies. It is mainly engaged in the design and manufacturing of automotive molds as well as the development and production of complete‑vehicle process tooling. Its equipment and manufacturing process technologies hold a leading position within China.

Scanning Object: 3D inspection of automobile lamp molds

Inspection Requirements: Inspect the wear of automobile lamp molds and perform subsequent 3D reverse restoration

Recommended Solution: Handheld 3D Scanner A22, 3D Inspection Software

Difficulties in Detection

1. The automobile lamp mold is bulky and difficult to move. Besides, the workpiece surface features metallic reflection. The overall workpiece is complex and irregular with abundant curved surfaces and contours. The uneven surface of the automobile lamp mold creates numerous angular dead‑zones, which greatly increases scanning difficulty.

2. The client needs to quickly obtain high‑precision 3D data of the automobile lamp mold to inspect mold wear and conduct mold repair. The client requires that no developer spray shall be applied during scanning. Traditional scanning solutions are not only highly difficult but also fail to meet the client’s requirements.

Solution

  After fully understanding the client's requirements and problems, the Holon 3D technical engineer recommends the handheld 3D scanner A22.

Product Features: The A22 is a portable handheld blue-light 3D scanner independently developed and manufactured by Holon 3D. Its key advantages include:

◆ Ultra-portable design, weighing only 0.92 kg;

◆ High precision (up to 0.020 mm) and high resolution (up to 0.01 mm);

◆ Blue laser technology: Suitable for measurement tasks in diverse environments—both indoors and outdoors—with superior resistance to interference;

◆ High-speed scanning: Features 22 laser lines and a measurement rate of 1,320,000 points per second;

◆ Large measurement volume and excellent stability; capable of measuring extra-large workpieces as a standalone unit;

◆ Virtually unrestricted 3D scanning: Unaffected by object size, material, or color, and requires no powder coating.

The A22’s high precision and efficiency effectively overcome the challenges associated with traditional scanning and measurement methods, eliminating the need for pre-scan powder coating. It enables the rapid and accurate acquisition of 3D scan data for all parts of a workpiece and resolves issues where traditional methods—such as those used for automotive headlight molds—failed to meet customer requirements. Highly satisfied with the results, the customer purchased our A22 handheld 3D scanner to replace their traditional measurement solution.
