A well‑known automotive parts manufacturer needed to carry out reverse design for an auto component. The company used the 3D scanner independently developed and manufactured by Holon to acquire high‑precision 3D data, and accelerated the development of new products with the help of reverse‑engineering software.

Facing problems

1. The pedal‑area layout differs for each vehicle model, resulting in a massive design workload. Conventional measurement methods are time‑consuming and yield insufficient data, making it difficult to support the subsequent design and inspection of car floor mats.

2. It is required to scan floor mats inside real vehicles. Given the relatively narrow interior space, traditional measurement approaches cannot be applied.

Solution

Due to business development needs, the company plans to process and manufacture automotive interior molds. For the production of car floor mats, the company’s original data‑acquisition method relied on manual workers to collect data inside vehicles. This method was low‑efficiency and yielded low‑accuracy data. Floor mats produced using such traditional processes left relatively large gaps at the footwell area. During driving, displacement of the floor mats could compromise braking safety.

To address the problems faced by the company, 3D engineers at Holon adopted the handheld 3D scanner HL‑3DH‑3M to acquire data for car floor mats, improving the efficiency and accuracy of 3D data acquisition. The handheld 3D scanner HL‑3DH‑3M features compact size, light weight, simple operation, fast scanning speed, and no need for an external AC power supply. It can reach narrow spaces inside vehicles to efficiently, rapidly and accurately capture 3D data of car floor mats. The whole process takes only 10 minutes with a data accuracy of 0.05. Reverse‑design software converts the point‑cloud data of car floor mats into triangular mesh surface data. The acquired 3D data of car floor mats are imported into reverse‑engineering software for post‑processing, which accelerates the secondary design of automobile seats, provides reliable parameters for other relevant departments, ensures that the final design fully meets production requirements, and speeds up the production of car floor mats.
