A well-known large-scale thermal power plant enterprise in China has specially invited our technical staff to conduct 3D scanning of the turbine casing in order to measure the super-large turbine casing and obtain high-precision 3D data, thereby providing effective data support for the production design of the turbine insulation cabin.

Facing problems

The turbine housing is welded from large castings, measuring approximately 5 meters in length and 2 meters in height. The complexity of the scanning environment increases the difficulty of scanning. Using traditional measuring tools takes a long time and cannot achieve complete scanning and data stitching.

During the scanning process of the turbine casing, due to the large and bulky size of the object being measured, as well as its uneven surface contours and complex shape, the accumulated error can become excessive. The biggest problem is how to eliminate the impact caused by this error.

Solution

The steam turbine is scanned in two parts, and the scanning area of the shell is large. To eliminate issues such as cumulative scanning errors and incomplete stitching, Huaguang 3D technology engineers propose a solution: using the ultra-large format 3D scanner α7000 and the 3D photogrammetry system 3DP to quickly obtain high-precision 3D data of the steam turbine shell. The point cloud data of the steam turbine shell is then converted into triangular mesh surface data using reverse design software. This provides powerful data for the production design of the steam turbine insulation cabin.

3DP is a portable optical three-coordinate device capable of measuring the three-dimensional coordinates of all marked points (or codes) at once. It can be used standalone or in conjunction with a 3D scanner. During measurement, a high-resolution digital camera takes photos of the object from different angles, and the resulting series of photos can be processed by software to obtain the precise spatial coordinates of these reference points.

The α7000 is a 3D scanner specifically designed for large objects. It features a large scanning area, fast scanning speed, high accuracy, and strong equipment stability. When combined with 3D photogrammetry, it can correct the point cloud information of large curved surfaces, significantly improving the overall point cloud stitching accuracy of the 3D scanner and enhancing work efficiency.
