Motorsport has a history of more than 100 years. Increasing attention has been paid to the safety of racing drivers. Entrusted by a well‑known racing company, Holon 3D worked to optimize racing car safety. After learning about the actual conditions, engineers at Holon 3D used the 3D scanner HL‑3DW to scan the interior space of the racing car as well as the engine compartment. Roll cages and engine‑protection devices were installed to improve the safety performance of the racing car.

Facing problems

1. Traditional measurement methods suffer from insufficient data‑sampling density (inadequate data volume). Moreover, they cannot measure curved surfaces and arcs of automotive interior parts, which makes subsequent inspection and reverse modeling impossible.

2. Scan the interior space of the racing car to acquire its internal spatial data for designing a more rational roll cage. The racing car body is 4.5 m long, 2.3 m wide and 1.7 m high. Ordinary 3D scanners feature a small scanning coverage area. When scanning, excessive cumulative scanning areas will lead to problems such as failure to locate marker points and poor alignment of scanned fragments. This results in heavy workload, low working efficiency, and acquired data that fails to meet accuracy requirements.

Solution

When installing a roll cage, the tubes are connected or welded one‑by‑one following the inner contour of the vehicle cabin. A professionally fitted roll cage not only handles emergency situations but also serves to reinforce the body strength and torsional rigidity of the car. Designing protective devices for the engine prevents the engine from being heavily squeezed when the race car rolls over, which could otherwise trigger an explosion and result in a severe accident.

1. Preliminary Preparation

Spraying the developer: to enhance the background contrast on the surface of the sample and obtain better‑quality scanning data. Applying marker points: to enable the acquired data to be positioned and stitched within the scanning software.

2、三维扫描

Holon 3D engineers use the 3D scanner (HL‑3DW) to acquire data of the vehicle interior space and the engine compartment. The 3D scanner (HL‑3DW) features:

    ● Extra‑large scanning field of view: It can quickly capture data for the vehicle interior and engine compartment and reduce stitching errors.

    ● Portable design: Easy to carry to the measurement site.
