For the instrument panel of the motorcycle, there are numerous and complex curved surfaces around its mounting holes. In the solution proposed by Holon's 3D engineers, the HL‑3DS 3D scanner (to quickly acquire high‑precision 3D data of the motorcycle instrument panel) and reverse‑design software (to convert the point‑cloud data of the motorcycle instrument panel into triangular mesh surface data) are adopted to carry out the secondary design of the motorcycle instrument panel.

Facing problems

1. The motorcycle instrument panel features numerous snap‑fit positions and hole positions, which need to fit closely with the instrument on the motorcycle. The 3D data of the motorcycle instrument panel requires extremely high precision, with the overall error controlled below 0.02 mm.

2. Traditional measurement methods suffer from insufficient data acquisition density (inadequate data volume). Moreover, they cannot measure the curved surfaces and hole positions of the motorcycle instrument panel, nor can they provide data support for secondary design in the later stage.

Solution

The customer’s original design progress for the motorcycle dashboard can no longer meet market demands. To address the problems faced by the customer, engineers at Hualang 3D proposed a solution: using the 3D scanner HL‑3DS (to quickly acquire high‑precision 3D data of the motorcycle dashboard) and reverse‑design software (to convert the point‑cloud data of the motorcycle dashboard into triangular mesh surface data) to carry out the secondary design of the motorcycle dashboard.

1. Preparatory Work

Spray developing agent: to improve the background contrast on the surface of the sample part and obtain better‑quality scanning data.

Attach marker points: to enable the acquired data to be positioned and spliced within the scanning software.

2. 3D Scanning

The HL‑3DS 3D scanner features fast scanning speed. It takes only 10 minutes to obtain 3D data of the motorcycle dashboard, with a high data accuracy of up to 0.02 mm. The HL‑3DS 3D scanner adopts multi‑frequency phase‑shift grating technology with extrapolation, marker‑point calibration technology, automatic full‑data splicing and other technologies. The motorcycle dashboard data is imported into 3D reverse‑engineering software for processing. This quickly resolves issues concerning the production quality and secondary design of the motorcycle dashboard, ensures normal product production, and provides an important basis for subsequent design modifications. It enhances the competitiveness of the company and creates benefits for the enterprise.
