Graphite mold blanks serve as the core substrate for precision molding processes; the accuracy of their external contours and cavity structures directly determines the quality of subsequent mold machining. To assess manufacturing compliance, the client required a digital inspection solution capable of capturing high-precision, comprehensive data via 3D scanning and generating a 3D inspection heat map through comparison with the original model to quantify deviations. Given the client's stringent requirements for scanning precision and detail fidelity—which traditional measurement methods could not meet—the HOLON 3D Smart 49 handheld industrial-grade 3D scanner (featuring full blue laser technology) was selected for the task.

The core challenges in inspecting graphite mold blanks stem from material properties and structural requirements. Graphite surfaces are porous and possess matte, light-absorbing characteristics, making traditional scanning equipment prone to incomplete data acquisition and blurred details. The blanks feature complex cavities and transitional curved surfaces that are difficult for traditional localized measurement tools to cover comprehensively, often resulting in scanning blind spots and data loss. Furthermore, strict precision requirements apply to parameters such as profile accuracy and cavity dimensions; traditional measurement methods offer limited precision, and manual data stitching tends to introduce cumulative errors, failing to meet the client's rigorous standards.

The HOLON3D Smart 49 scanner offers a targeted solution to these challenges, combining industrial metrology-grade accuracy with all-blue laser technology to handle light-absorbing graphite materials without requiring special pre-treatment. It precisely captures critical data—such as the workpiece's overall profile and cavity details—and features four scanning modes that allow for flexible switching based on specific characteristics, such as the general outline or internal cavities. Its handheld design enables free angle adjustment, ensuring comprehensive scanning with no blind spots. High-speed, non-contact measurement prevents damage to the graphite material and operates without environmental constraints; stable, high-quality data output is achieved with minimal marker placement. By comparing scan data against the original model to generate clear color maps, the system accurately quantifies errors and scientifically assesses quality compliance, fully meeting customer needs and providing reliable support for quality control and the optimization of subsequent processing.
