Castings are metal components produced via various casting methods; the process involves multiple stages of liquid-metal forming that are difficult to control precisely, resulting in inconsistent quality—a factor that significantly impacts the performance of the final mechanical products.

The client wishes to perform 3D scanning on a casting and compare the acquired data against the original digital model for inspection purposes. High data accuracy is required; the casting is small in size and features a curved surface with a central depression. Traditional measurement methods struggle to meet these requirements, resulting in excessive errors during inspection.

HOLON engineers utilized the HOLON B71 handheld 3D scanner to perform a comprehensive scan of the casting. Operating in deep-hole mode with a single blue laser line, the system delivered complete scan data with high precision (0.02 mm). The acquired data was imported into 3D inspection software for alignment and comparison against the original digital model, generating an easy-to-understand inspection report. This report provided the client with detailed comparative data, effectively meeting their requirements.
